After an extensive search, the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church, Washington, DC is pleased to announce Rev. Darryl Roberts, Ph.D. has been called to serve as its new Senior Pastor. Dr. Roberts was elected during a special church business meeting on Saturday, October 22, 2016. Rev. Roberts will begin his pastoral leadership as pastor-elect. Information regarding installation services is forthcoming.
Rev. Roberts is a gifted preacher and teacher who will advance the church’s mission of meaningfully sharing God’s grace and love with local, national, and global communities. Roberts believes that Nineteenth Street is a great fit in this new season of ministry because of its distinctive mission and core values: “Nineteenth street’s unique commitment of supporting men and women in leadership, deep appreciation for purpose & mission-driven ministry, rich history of empowering preaching & teaching, and unusual passion for Christian witness that strives to share Christ’s love with the world makes this a unique opportunity that only comes once or twice in a life-time.”
Rev. Dr. Darryl D. Roberts has served as the Senior Pastor for 5 years at Mount Welcome Missionary Baptist Church, Decatur, GA. He is preceded by Rev. Dr. Derrick Harkins, who was called to a new assignment at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Rev. Roberts received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Ethics from Emory University’s Graduate Division of Religion. He also earned a Juris Doctorate from Boston College Law School, a Master of Divinity degree from the University of Chicago, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Grinnell College. Rev. Roberts is a graduate of the Morehouse College of Pastoral Leadership, and has served on the executive boards of Atlanta’s Concerned Black Clergy, the Atlanta Missionary Baptist Association and DeKalb County’s NAACP. He is the recent recipient of the In The Spirit Award, the NAACP Religious Affairs Award and the Gospel Choice Chosen Award for his commitment to public service. Rev. Roberts is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. He is married to Laura Morgan Roberts, Ph.D. They are the parents of two children, a daughter, Anaiah, and a son, Isaiah.

Nineteenth Street Baptist Church was founded in 1839 in the nation’s capital by a group of visionary men and women. The church remained on the corner of 19th and I Streets, N.W. for 135 years until it moved, January 26, 1975, to its present location at 4606 Sixteenth Street, N.W. For more than 177 years, the church has been and remains committed to being a place where Christians can serve the Lord with joy, grow spiritually, and fellowship with one another. In the last 132 years, the church has had 3 Senior Pastors, the late Rev. Dr. Walter H. Brooks; Rev. Dr. Jerry A. Moore, Jr., and Rev. Dr. Derrick Harkins. Nineteenth Street Baptist Church sponsors outreach ministries, which address needs such as homelessness, health and wellness, and food insufficiency. The church has hosted renowned historical events including the meeting that led to the founding of the National Association of Colored Women and the first meeting regarding the creation of the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
